I have a 9 mile commute and am sick of buying into the whole gas slavery that my car has forced me into. I was thinking about getting a scooter, most likely electric. Any suggestions?

I think you'd be better off buying a gas scooter, because electric ones are relatively new and besides, you'd have to wait for a while after your scooter's run out of charge. I would recommend the Bajaj line of scooters. They're Indian, and you can see them all over the place when you're in India. They also get fantastic gas mileage. Also, if you're still set on getting an electric scooter, look at places like AutoZone and PepBoys (where they sell electric scooters, but I really don't know why!) for electric scooters under $1000

At the disadvantage of not knowing your speed requirements, elevation, flat or hilly terrain . . 49cc 4-strokes go around 30 mph and are classified in SOME states as mopeds, and may not require registration or insurance. 150cc 4-strokes go around 60 mph, need to be registered and insured as motorcycles, and require that driver license endorsement.
"Best" would be a Honda, Yamaha, or Kymco from a local dealer . . or possibly used from your regional craigslist.
"Most economic" (unclear if you mean initial sales price or operating, maintenance, and depreciation costs) would be an online crate scooter purchase.

If there are no hills, posted speed limits faster than 25, and you
have alternative transport for snow conditions I'd suggest a 50cc
of Japanese make. The Chinese Models have more problems.
I also know a 32 year old mother of two who bicycles 24 miles
each way on her five day work week except on snow days; then,
she rides in with a co-worker and shares fuel cost.
