We Brits of course …
We Brits of course had the ‘Sports Moped’ 50cc of raw unbridled power. Until the government castrated them on 1st August 1977.. I had that ’sachs’ too, in the form of a Puch Maxi standard vairent then later , a sport with the seperate petrol tank. Not forgetting my fantastic NVT easy rider, which was a 2 speed auto with Franco Morini engine.

For the most part, yes. Most states specified automatic transmissions. Some of the early mopeds from the 50s and 60s had manual transmissions, but they were mostly considered small motorcycles.
